International Nuclear Plant Support Company: Perfect Engineering is in the Detail

Challenge
An international company, responsible for performing facility inspections, decontamination and component repair services for nuclear plants around the world, usually uses metal containers to ship damaged components to and from their repair facility. Occasionally, the size of the component requires the manufacturing of a special container—in this instance, it was for a large pump to be transported via flatbed. Since developing customized metal packaging to safely ship costly equipment is expensive and time-consuming, the company considered manufacturing a soft-sided product instead. However, this option was not without concerns: Will the container be waterproof? Will it provide enough of a barrier between the component and the trailer to protect the contents during transit? Can it be properly secured if transported via flatbed? And of course there are the requisite questions regarding legal packaging requirements for shipments with potential or known radiation contamination.

Solution
Paying meticulous attention to the tiniest detail, PacTec’s engineers designed a dual-layered, soft-sided shipping container (NucPac™) that utilized our patented zipper closure. This container not only met DOT packaging requirements for radioactive contaminated objects, it was also customized to perfectly fit the actual component. An interior layer performed dual functions: first, by offering a cushion between the component and the exterior waterproof, non-shred layer, and also by absorbing any liquids that could potentially leak out of the component itself. And the zipper was specifically positioned to eliminate the possibility of rainwater penetrating the interior, plus prevent water from collecting at the top of the container during transit or intermediate storage. The end result? The component’s timely arrival in perfect condition and a container cost savings of more than $20,000.
